Scythe Kamazo 2 eSATA 2.5-inch External HDD Enclosure Review - Testing and Final Thoughts

One of the biggest difficulties I've come across in 2.5-inch passport sized enclosures is getting them sufficient power.  That's why I'd have to say one of my favorite features on this enclosure is the additional USB-powered "DC" port.

Firing it up

Upon plugging it in using the Y-split USB power cable, it responded promptly, with a pleasant blue LED.  One note is that the LED is somewhat bright, which might be something some may not find to be a favorite feature, but I find no evil in it.  When using it with the additional DC-USB cable, I did notice a slight increase in speed, and reliability in power is something I'm very enthusiastic about with this enclosure!

At this time, we have not tested out the eSATA connection, but the USB speeds are on par with other wall-powered units, and we have no reason to believe that the eSATA will allow us to max out the speed of the HDD inside.

The aluminum case keeps the drive very cool, and even after hours of continuous running, the case is still cool to the touch, and dissipates heat very effectively.

The Final Words

The Scythe Kamazo 2 2.5-inch eSATA External HDD Enclosure surprised us with some very forward-thinking features, as well as subtle details such as a nice finish, efficient design, and reliable power options for those who really need their external hard drives to perform.  All-in-all, this is bar-none one of our favorite 2.5-inch enclosures we have used, and it's price really gives is a great value!
